Why & How to Start a Newsletter for Your Brand
Hey there,
Here’s why you should start a newsletter for your brand:
✅ It’s a great way to stay in touch with your target audience every week
✅ It scales incredibly well—it takes the same amount of time to write a newsletter sent to 100 subscribers and one sent to 100,000 subscribers
✅ It offers a quick and affordable way to do market research—you can use polls within your newsletter to learn more about your potential customers
Here are a few tips to make your newsletter a success:
1. Give it a unique name
Your newsletter shouldn’t be about your product—it should be about a core topic that interests your target audience.
Reflect that focus in the name of your newsletter.
Don’t name it “[Your company name]’s Newsletter”. Instead, give it a unique name (e.g., HubSpot’s “The Hustle”).
2. Skip the blog links
Avoid turning your newsletter into a link dump by using it to distribute links to your blog content.
While it’s fine to repurpose some of your blog content in your newsletter emails, your newsletter should be its own separate thing and ideally offer exclusive content you haven’t published anywhere else.
3. Don’t (just) talk about your product
You can mention your product in your newsletter emails from time to time, especially when it’s relevant to the context of an email.
But you shouldn’t use your newsletter to constantly talk about your product or end every email with a “Sign Up” or “Buy Now” CTA.
There are a lot of ways you can grow your newsletter, a lot of them being free (e.g., promoting it on your website and social media pages).
But don’t shy away from paid promotion, either. Facebook Ads, Sparkloop, and Refind Ads can all be great ways to drive relevant subscribers to your newsletter.
