8 Steps to Update Your Blog Content in 2024

Hey there,

If you still haven’t updated your blog content for 2024, here’s your reminder to do so. And a checklist to help you get started:

1. Check if the content aligns with search intent

If you want your content to rank, the most important thing you need to do is to ensure it aligns with and solves the search intent behind the user’s query (ie., what the searcher is looking to do).

The four main types of search intent include:

  • Navigational

  • Informational

  • Commercial

  • Transactional

Sometimes, Google’s understanding of the search intent behind a specific query or keyword can change.

This makes it important to review the top-ranking pages for the keyword periodically to get a clear understanding of the search intent behind it.

2. Restructure, add, or remove content (if needed)

If your content doesn’t align with the search intent or doesn’t help solve the user’s query, you might need to do some restructuring, or even add or remove content.

In general, you’ll want to structure your content in such a way that it helps searchers accomplish what they’re looking to do as quickly as possible.

Sometimes, this might mean removing unnecessary sections, or adding any missing information that might make the content more helpful.

3. Check facts, sources, and quotes

Next, you’ll want to get all your facts straight.

Check all the claims you make within the content and make sure they’re accurate.

Link to sources where your claims can be verified, and attribute any quotes to their respective owners.

Broken links, apart from being an SEO issue, are also a big nuisance for your website visitors.

Check both internal and external links, and make sure they lead to their intended target pages without issues.

Also, add any additional links readers might find useful.

5. Replace outdated product screenshots

Over time, your product’s UI will change. You need to make sure these changes are reflected in the product screenshots you use within your content.

Go through the content and replace any outdated product screenshots you find.

6. Optimize for search engines

Even though you might think that you’ve optimized the content the first time around, it’s good to do another check when performing an update.

Optimize the title, introduction, and headings. If needed, change the URL and redirect the old URL to the new one. Add alt tags for all the images you use within the content.

7. Add CTAs

If you want to convert your blog traffic, you need to include a call-to-action (CTA) in your blog posts.

Check any existing CTAs and make sure they link to the right landing pages. Revise the CTA copy if needed. Add additional CTAs where it makes sense to do so.

8. Spelling and grammar check

It would be a waste if you did all this work, only to let the content be riddled with spelling and grammar errors.

Go through the content one more time and fix any spelling and grammar mistakes you find. Use a tool like Grammarly to make sure you spot every single mistake.

Update your content for 2024

Going through the 8 steps above will give your content the best chance of ranking this year.

Now go ahead and start updating!
