Why You Should Stop Oversimplifying Your Content
Hey there,
Has anyone recommended that you should "write like a fifth grader" when creating content?
We've all heard this advice. But it's a mistake if you:
Have a very technical audience
Are writing for people with 10+ years of experience on the topic
Are addressing the C-suite
Using overly simplified language or examples when addressing these types of audiences might very easily be seen as condescending.
Or, you might come off as someone who doesn’t really know what they’re talking about.
When choosing a tone, voice, and style for your content, it’s important to consider your target audience.
You can’t just decide this at random.
Talk to existing or potential customers to understand how they like to be addressed and what kind of content they prefer to consume.
Ask them to share examples of content they really like and what they like about it.
Use this information when determining the type of language to use for your content.
And stop blindly adopting every piece of advice you see online.
