5 Tips to Help You Succeed as a One-Person Content Team

Are you a one-person content team? Here are 5 tips to help you succeed:

1. Don’t overextend yourself

The biggest mistake small content teams make is that they try doing so many different things at once.

They start a blog, a newsletter, and a podcast, and try juggling all three.

The problem with doing this is that you usually end up not doing any single thing exceptionally well.

Pick one channel (e.g., a podcast) and focus on making it work.

2. Focus on things that scale

Most content marketers focus on SEO content. But as a content team of one, it might make sense to focus on other channels first.

For example, it takes the same amount of effort to write a newsletter read by 10 people and one read by 10,000 people.

And it’s much easier to build an email list of 10,000 subscribers than it is to get to 10,000 organic clicks per week from scratch.

3. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose

While you should start by focusing on one channel, repurposing content will be key when you start expanding to more channels.

For example, if your blog is your main channel, splice up your blog posts into individual email newsletters or social media posts.

This will save you so much time, which you can then reinvest into creating more content for your primary content channel.

4. Set expectations

It’s crucial that you let stakeholders know what kind of results they can expect from content marketing (and when).

Create a forecast for the results you expect to achieve within the next 3-6-12 months.

And talk in terms of metrics the C-suite cares about: revenue and return on investment.

5. Document everything

As a one-person content team, you’re doing a lot to keep things moving forward.

But most people at your company (including higher-ups) won’t be aware of it.

You’ll want to document everything you’re doing and ideally share it in a public space (such as a public channel in your company’s Slack instance).

This will ensure your efforts get recognized—and might even help land you a budget for hiring more people for your content team.
