How to Choose Content Formats for Your Content Strategy

It's not just about SEO articles

Hey there,

Most companies have a blog these days. But content marketing isn’t just about SEO articles.

Here’s how to choose which content formats to focus on:

1. Talk to customers

The first thing you should do is talk to existing and potential customers.

What kind of content do they consume? Where do they go when they have a problem: Google, YouTube, or TikTok? Or somewhere else?

This will help you understand which platforms you should be on and the types of content you should be creating.

2. Analyze the competition

What kind of content are your competitors creating? And where are they publishing it?

Analyze your competitors’ content and find out which content formats and channels get the most attention from their audience.

3. Consider your resources

Depending on your internal resources (including budget and skills), some content formats might be out of reach for you even if they might be preferred by your audience.

One example might be podcasts.

In these cases, you’ll need to decide on one of the following: try to squeeze out more budget for content production, settle on less-than-perfect content, or opt for a different content format.

All three options come with their pros and cons, and this is something you’ll need to align on with stakeholders (the next step).

4. Align with stakeholders

All stakeholders need to be on the same page about which content formats you’ll be focusing on and how much this is going to cost.

You should also make sure to set expectations when it comes to return on investment and timelines.

This will prevent disappointment and other issues that might come up down the road due to misunderstandings.
